Exhibition showcasing the best of Kashmiri handicrafts inaugurated at Pahalgam Kashmir


Srinagar, March 24: (KNS) Pahalgam Kashmir: Pahalgam will host a “craft mela”, a unique handicraft and hand weaving exhibition showcasing the exquisite arts and crafts of Kashmir. The exhibition was jointly organized by the o/o Development Commissioner Handlooms Government of India & Directorate of Handicrafts & Handlooms Kashmir.

Director of Handicrafts and Looms of Kashmir Mahmood Ahmad Shah inaugurated the exhibition in the presence of the district administration officers including the Pahalgam Development Authority. Speaking on the occasion, H&H Kashmir Director said that the exhibition will provide artisans with a suitable marketing platform to sell their beautiful products directly to buyers and give tourists visiting Pahalgam an opportunity to get a glimpse of the richness of Kashmir arts and crafts.

The director said this exhibit will appeal to connoisseur and consumer alike, as our skilled artisans have given creative expression to their rich folklore through this medium for centuries.

The particular attraction of the ongoing exhibition that attracts visitors is the live demonstration of the various crafts including spinning and Kani and the setting up of a themed pavilion by the Weavers Service Centre, Srinagar.

The 14-day exhibition will showcase the best Kashmiri handicrafts including Pashmina, Kani and other handicrafts. The Pahalgam exhibition is the fourth physical exhibition of the year 2022 which has been organized by the Department of H&H Kashmir within UT this year. The department is aware that the inventory of artisans has accumulated due to the COVID pandemic and that platforms like this will be provided to artisans inside and outside of UT in order to sell their products.

The Department is also heavily involved in the ongoing SurajKund Crafts Mela in Haryana which started on March 19, 2022.

The department is also currently organizing another exhibition at Tulip Garden Srinagar which started on March 23, 2022 and attracts a large number of tourists to it. The said exhibition was opened by the JK UT Chief Secretary, Dr. Arun Kumar Mehta.

The Chief Secretary was accompanied by Shri Deeraj Kumar Gupta, Principal Secretary, Department of Housing and Urban Development and Shri Ranjan Parkash Thakur, Secretary-Commissioner, Department of Industries and Commerce.

The Chief Secretary inspected the stalls and interacted with grassroots artisans to whom the Department of Handicrafts and Handicrafts of Kashmir provided the rent-free space to sell their wares directly to buyers at this prestigious location .

The General Secretary gave instructions on the spot to increase the number of stalls in order to accommodate more craftsmen who intend to set up their stalls on this potential site. Kashmir’s Director of Handicrafts and Handicrafts, Mahmood Ahmad Shah, briefed the visiting dignitary on the department’s ongoing efforts to link artisans directly with buyers. He gave a brief overview of the current physical events that the Department is participating in, the most prominent being the Suraj Kund event currently taking place in Haryana in which J&K is participating as thematic partner and the other events being the India Carpet Show in Noida , Special Handicrafts and Handloom Fair in Gulmarg and Pahalgam.
