Maine author to feature story of Elephant Mountain B-52

GREENVILLE – United States Navy veteran and author Joseph R. Wax, MD, in conjunction with the Moosehead Historical Society, will present “FINAL MISSION The North Woods,” the story of the Elephant Mountain B-52 tragedy, at 6 p.m. on Friday, September 1. 9 at the Moosehead History and Culture Center in Greenville.

This gripping tale chronicles the events and aftermath of an ill-fated Strategic Air Command B-52 Stratofortress mission over the desolate North Woods of Maine at the height of the Cold War, as revealed by the men who miraculously survived. and the families of those who perished.


Described as “a great historical account”, this well-documented book recalls in detail the mission of this flight, including the causes and the response to the accident. Proclaimed “a powerful and moving tribute,” readers are rewarded with rich personal memorabilia and period photographs humanizing the crew members and their families.

Following the presentation, the author will be available to sign copies of “FINAL MISSION The North Woods” which can be purchased on site or in advance from the following Moosehead area merchants: The Corner Shop, Indian Hill Trading Post , Kamp Kamp, The Moosehead Historical Society, Northeast Whitewater and, as well as All proceeds from the author are donated to Maine charities on behalf of the B-52 flight crew.
