David Moyes became lyrical about Michail Antonio after the forward became West Ham United’s leading scorer in the Premier League, via quotes from football.london.
Antonio hit his 48th goal in the top flight in burgundy and blue in the Hammers’ 4-1 win over Leicester on Monday. His strike restored the hosts ‘two-goal advantage after the Foxes retired with less than one goal, and quickly netted a brace to secure the Irons’ top spot in the table.
Antonio, a former right-back, right-midfielder and versatile winger turned striker, has now passed Paulo Di Canio in goals. He may have even managed a hat-trick against Leicester, but crossed liberally for Said Benrahma after catching Caglar Soyuncu’s mistake.
Soyuncu couldn’t stop Antonio from hitting his first and West Ham’s third either. Before the 31-year-old ended his night by passing the ball past two defenders and pushing Kasper Schmeichel. Earn Moyes’ praise for changing his game.
“The second half, he was in a different class. His linking game, his positioning, he offered a lot. He was very good ”, Moyes noted. Before adding: “He’s got a great personality, he’s a great character and I think he probably just needed some direction, which he has on his own.
“I think the great thing about Mick is that he reached the stage of his career when he realized that being in great shape can make a big difference. His family life and his family life are stable, and we have given him a position where he has performed very well.
“He’s probably wondering why he wasn’t center-forward from the start! I think he can score more goals and I hope he will this year. He is a great worker, he has power and rhythm.
Antonio deserves all the applause for West Ham’s success
Antonio deserves all the praise he gets for becoming West Ham’s all-time leading scorer in the Premier League era. He has changed his game time and time again to accommodate a myriad of systems under a multitude of coaches. And he now has a home with the striker and has made it his own.
The striker showed against Leicester how he can change his style in the middle of a match to achieve the best results as well. Fittingly, he then received the praise of Moyes when the West Ham boss spoke so fondly of Antonio’s exploits after the game.
Moyes is hoping to see Antonio now extend his West Ham record by targeting a third consecutive double-digit campaign. Potentially improving the 10 goals the Jamaican international has achieved in each of the past two top seasons.
