April 23, 2022 – A brand new initiative to bring Zagreb’s markets back to life, which were a traditional place for everything from shopping for goods to socializing for centuries, hopes to yield good results here in the capital.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, this new initiative of the Civic Platform “1postozagrad”, which wants Zagreb’s markets to remain lively even after normal working hours, wants to restore the importance of the city’s markets. The idea is for selected Zagreb markets to have their own recognizable fair held once a week, modeled on what the British do with theirs, and where an antiques fair is held on Sundays.

The Zagreb markets initiative has been sent to the mayor and they are now awaiting an official response. The request was immediately forwarded to Zagreb Markets, whose director, according to Simpraga, showed openness and willingness to start this project in stages. As such, the Zagorka Fair has been chosen to be the first fair under the wider initiative, which is expected to be held on the eve of City Day, more specifically on May 31, 2022.

“We were guided by the fact that certain markets, ie certain parts of the city have a history of a certain activity, for example Kvatric has a history of selling flowers. In this sense, we have proposed that the Kvatric market has, for example, the sale of plants on Wednesdays from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. from March to October,” explained Sasa Simpraga for HRT.

He added that they also offer an art fair, a craft, design and art fair for the same plot, and the ZG OPG fair for the Tresnjevka market. He said many family farms have contacted them and asked for such activities themselves.

”We also suggested some very practical things, for example, that you have a place where everyone with children can come and swap used toys and baby items. I think such proposals are very realistic and necessary, and they would certainly enrich Zagreb,” Simpraga concluded.
